New Rules for Resurrection

I feel that the 4th edition ruleset makes returning FROM THE DEAD far too easy.

So there are a few new rituals. The old-fashioned “Raise Dead” ritual doesn’t work.

Balance the Scales
Level: 9
Category: Restoration
Time: 1 hour
Duration: Instantaneous
Component Cost: 5000 GP in diamonds and holy water
Market Price: ???
Key Skill: Heal (no check)

To perform the Balance the Scales ritual, you must have a part of the corpse of a creature that died no more than 30 days ago. You apply mystic salves, then pray to the gods to restore the dead creature’s life. The subject returns to life as if he or she had taken an extended rest. The subject is freed of any temporary conditions suffered at death, but permanent conditions remain.

However, there is a critical flaw to Balance the Scales’ casting – it requires the sacrifice of a living creature with an alignment identical to the creature being resurrected. It does not matter if the sacrificed creature is willing or not, only that the character’s alignment matches the target of the spell.

During the casting, the soul of the dead character is aware that he is being pulled back to the realm of the living; as such, he is aware of what his or her companions are doing during the ritual and can see what creature is sacrificed.

The subject returns with a death penalty: –1 to all attack rolls, skill checks, saving throws, and ability checks. This death penalty fades after the subject reaches three milestones.

You can’t restore life to a creature that has been petrified or to a creature that died of old age.

The subject’s soul must be free and willing to return to life. Some magical effects trap the soul and thus prevent Raise Dead from working, and the gods can intervene to prevent a soul from ourneying back to the realm of the living.

Font of Life
Level: 13
Category: Restoration
Time: 1 Hour
Duration: Instantaneous
Component Cost: 10,000 GP in diamonds and holy water
Market Price: ????
Key Skill: Religion – DC 15 (See Text)

To perform the Font of Life ritual, you must have a part of the corpse of a creature that died no more than 30 days ago. You apply mystic salves, then pray to the gods to restore the dead creature’s life. The subject returns to life as if he or she had taken an extended rest. The subject is freed of any temporary conditions suffered at death, but permanent conditions remain.

The condition of the remains is not a factor. So long as some small portion of the creature’s body still exists, it can be resurrected, but the portion receiving the spell must have been part of the creature’s body at the time of death. The creature can have been dead no longer than 10 years per level of the caster.

You can resurrect someone in this way even if they have been turned into an undead or were killed by a specific effect, such as being petrified.

The subject’s soul must be free and willing to return to life. Some magical effects trap the soul and thus prevent Raise Dead from working, and the gods can intervene to prevent a soul from ourneying back to the realm of the living.

The primary issue with Font of Life is its location. In order to properly cast this ritual, the caster must make a DC 15 Religion check in order to determine where the spell is cast. Often times, it must be a very sacred altar to a god that was worshiped by the character in question; other times (especially if the character was not very religious) the altar must be decorated with soil from the characters’ homeland; sometimes, the caster will even need to be deep beneath the earth or high on a mountain to make the spell function.

The subject suffers no death penalty when brought back with Font of Life.

That Which Was Given

Level: 18
Category: Restoration
Time: 10 Minutes
Duration: Instantaneous
Component Cost: 25,000 GP worth of diamonds and holy water
Market Price: ???
Key Skill: Heal (no check)

This ritual is incredibly powerful, dating back to the earliest of spells passed on high from the Gods. The dead character may be dead for 10 years per level of the caster. This spell can even bring back creatures whose bodies have been destroyed, provided that you unambiguously identify the deceased in some fashion (reciting the deceased’s time and place of birth or death is the most common method).

Upon completion of the spell, the creature is immediately restored to full hit points, vigor, and health, with no loss of level, death penalty, or other negative results.

You can revive someone killed by a death effect or someone who has been turned into an undead creature and then destroyed. This spell can also resurrect magical creatures like elementals, angels, or otherwise.

Even true resurrection can’t restore to life a creature who has died of old age.

The subject’s soul must be free and willing to return to life. Some magical effects trap the soul and thus prevent Raise Dead from working, and the gods can intervene to prevent a soul from ourneying back to the realm of the living.
