Redder Hander of Doomer (2nd RHOD Campaign)
There are only ten primary languages.
Common: The lingua franca of Hesperia. Spread by the far-reaching Julian Empire, Common is a guttertongue; a bastard language that has been passed to all peoples of the realm. It has regional variations and dialects, but for the most part you can manage to convey your meaning to other humans. Common is also used by Halflings and Tieflings, who have evolved alongside their fallen Empire’s language. It uses the Julian / Common alphabet.
Deep Speech: The language of those that dwell beneath the earth, Deep Speech is a bastardized language from the Time of Monsters, sharing an alphabet with Elven. Deep Speech is descended from the dark and dangerous creatures found beneath the surface of the earth, or from aberrations from across the stars.
Draconic: The language of the Dragons is an ancient one that predates even the Time of Monsters – the cataclysmic era before Mankind’s hegemony. It uses its own alphabet, and is still spoken by the dragons that remain in Hesperia. However, it is also used as a scholarly or archaeological language, since during their reign it was used as a similar lingua franca between the various races.
Dwarven: “The Khazad fled to the hills, and they took their ore with them.” Dwarven as a language descends from Supernal, like many other languages, but the dwarves’ long bouts of isolation and splintering between the different mountains means that it is a unique language all its own.
Elven: The mystical languages of the Eladrin is shared by elves and other outsider races. It shares an alphabet with its bastard-brother, Deep Speech.
Giant: This simple language has powerful fricatives and is used throughout the highlands. A common language amongst monstrous languages, it came from the far East when the great Golden Horde swept across the land. Simple races- ogres, orcs, giants – all adopted it.
Goblin: Goblin is a difficult language to classify, but it appears as a pidgin language between goblin and giant. It is spoken by all the goblinoid races – goblins, hobgoblins, some fey, peerie trow, trolls, and bugbears.
Primordial is the oldest language in existence, and it is also one of the most varied. Efreeti, archons, elementals – all of them represent the chaos of the First World. The only thing that they all have in common is Primordial, the language they spoke in the outer planes and in the material world. There are four distinct dialects for each of the four elements.
Supernal: The language of angels in service of good gods – and the gods themselves, Supernal is a unique language is that when spoken by certain begins of great power, it is heard by the listener in whatever language they are most fluent in. It is written with its own flowing script.
Infernal: Devils and angels in service of dark gods both speak Infernal with great fluence.
Other languages still exist; dialects of gnolls, sauhugin, salad, darklings, fey, ribald trow, nymphs, druids, and other minor languages, but the eleven above are the most common languages.
